Yesterday, we attended the Memorial Day Service to remember all the victims who were killed in the genocide in Srebrenica 24 years ago. The theme of the event was “Bridging the Divide: Confronting Hate”.
On Wednesday 3rd of July 2017, we successfully hosted the screening of Under The Wire (2018), which flings us on to the frontline of the final joint assignment of the legendry war correspondent Marie Colvin and her colleague, the distinguished photographer Paul Conroy, covering the plight of Syrian civilians besieged in Homs, Syria.
On Thursday 20 June, we successfully hosted a one-day conference on therapeutic work with Syrian refugees. The conference aimed at creating a space for therapists and other mental health practitioners working therapeutically with Syrian refugees to reflect, interact and share insights with one another.
On Wednesday 19 June 2019 we hosted a roundtable with participants from Syrian diaspora leaders programme in the UK. The event was part of Common Purpose’s programme which aims to build the capacity of Syrian leaders in the diaspora to contribute to Syria and the diaspora community.
On Saturday 15th June 2019, we took part in a unique tour of the city centre organised by Invisible Manchester, a social enterprise that offers friendly walking tours by tour guides who have experienced homelessness.
On Saturday 8 June 2019, we celebrated our 9th Annual Syrian day at the Abraham Moss Community School in Manchester. Despite the gloomy weather, we are pleased to announce that the event was a remarkable success. It was reported that around 1300 people from different backgrounds, Syrians and non-Syrians came together to celebrate Eid al-Fitr with their families and friends.
Three community Iftars have been successfully organised for the Syrian community in Manchester during this blessed month of Ramadan. Every Iftar was attended by approximately 80 people who had their Iftar and then performed Taraweeh prayer together.
We organised a fundraising Iftar on Friday 24 May 2019 at Eastern Pearl Restaurant in Manchester. The purpose was to raise money for Iqraa School, which was established in Aleppo suburb, Syria through the support of the Syrian community in Manchester and their friends.
On Thursday 16 May 2019 we attended a community Iftar hosted by the Syrian community in Liverpool. The event enabled members of the Syrian community in Manchester and Liverpool to interact and share experiences with one another. It also highlighted the prospects for future collaborative work.
On Tuesday 14 May 2019, Manchester Amnesty International hosted a talk on Syrian detainees in Assad’s prisons. Our manager Dr Haytham Alhamwi delivered a touching presentation on the plight of thousands of Syrian civilians who have been unlawfully and arbitrarily detained primarily by the Assad regime and its affiliated militias.
