Inspired by the happy atmosphere surrounding the World Cup, we invited our Syrian community members to play a 5-aside football at Sugden Sports Centre. Despite the cold weather, the game was played, and it was fun, enjoyable and competitive. 15people played the game and were from different age categories.
On Tuesday 6 Dec, we hosted a social gathering for ladies. It was a great opportunity for ladies to connect with each other in an informal and friendly settings and discuss different issues and concerns facing our community and plan different social activities that respond to the need of Syrians and Arabs in Manchester.
On Wed 16 Nov 2022 we hosted ana panel discussion “How Bad is That?” highlighting what poverty looks like in Greater Manchester.
On Sunday 14 November 2022 members of our community went to St John Ambulance House to learn 3 ways to save a life. It was a highly beneficial session and we cannot recommend it enough. If a group you are a member of would like to get free training, please email savealife@sja.org.uk
On Fri 11 November, we hosted a social gathering for ladies at our center. The purpose was to encourage ladies to talk about any experience they went through and share it with the audience with the lesson learned. It was a good opportunity for ladies to connect in a friendly and informal manner and to relate to each other and support each other in their different journeys.
On Wed 9 November we screened the award-winning documentary Hostile that was written, directed, and produced by the BAFTA-longlisted filmmaker Sonita Gale. The documentary focused on the UK’s complicated relationship with its migrant communities.
On Saturday 22 Oct we had the honour to host a distinguished panel at our new premises of Rethink Rebuild Society. The panel featured a conversation with the renowned humanitarian surgeon, Professor David Nott OBE, author of the best-selling memoir “War Doctor”, and Co-Founder of David Nott Foundation.
On Thursday 20 October RR hosted an online course about coding entitled "Coding 4 Children Part II" and delivered by "Kids&Codes" organisation. The targeted participants were young people between 8 and 12 years old from a refugee or migrant background. The course was attended by children who showed their enthusiasm to learn about coding.
It was a great evening celebrating the academic achievements of undergraduate Syrian students who graduated in 2022 from different universities with different degrees in the UK. The event took place in our centre on Sunday 16 October.
We are proud of Syrian students' success, and we wish them all the best in their academic and career endeavours.
We were happy to participate in a guided walk round parts of the Manchester Peace Trail to raise funds for the Manchester Group of Amnesty International. Thanks to Steve Roman for leading our Human Rights guided walk yesterday and to everyone who supported the event
