The Syrian community and various organisations have inaugurated 'Syria House' in Trafalgar Square as a tribute to the earthquake victims. This new temporary community space will be open to the public for three days, commencing on Tuesday, 14th February, from 5 pm to 8 pm. It aims to invite people to join in commemorating the Syrian earthquake victims and express solidarity with the families of those who are still missing following the devastating Syria-Türkiye earthquakes.
This initiative, organised by the Syrian community in the UK and British-based Syrian civil society organizations, was formally launched on Tuesday, 14th February. The event was attended by His Majesty King Charles III, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, Leader of Westminster City Council, Adam Hug, and various government officials.
The catastrophic earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria have resulted in the loss of over 37,000 lives, with hundreds of thousands more injured and many still missing. These disasters have left countless individuals mourning the loss of their loved ones, along with the complete devastation of entire areas. Moreover, these events have further exacerbated displacement in a region already scarred by war.
In light of the absence of an official space in London that represents the Syrian people, 'The Syria House' will play a pivotal role as an open center of support and solidarity for those affected.
