To celebrate Refugee Week, Rethink Rebuild Society teamed up with Amnesty Manchester to host a screening of the film Samba on 23 June, which deals with the story of a Senegalese migrant facing deportation from France. Afterwards, we had an enlightening discussion drawing out the similarities with problems faced by Syrian refugees in Europe.
We hosted a film screening on 25 May in collaboration with Save the Children UK of "This is Exile", an extraordinary intimate portrait of Syrian child refugees forced to flee from the violence in Syria to neighbouring Lebanon. We had a very honest and in-depth discussion following the movie on some of the issues that came out of this film.
We hosted a movie screening on 24 April for 'Selma', which depicts the African American struggle for equality in the US in the civil rights era. The movie was followed by a discussion of the lessons that we can learn as Syrians from the African American struggle, and what it means to demand rights and freedom.
