On Thursday, 11 Nov 2021, Dr Moaz El Sayed, our Research & Advocacy Officer was invited by Ambition for Ageing to a seminar called: Community research: Belonging in neighbourhoods for dispersed communities’. Dr El Sayed spoke about some points related to conducting research reflecting on our experience in conducting research with elderly refugees.
On Wed, 10 Nov 2021, Dr Moaz El Sayed, our Research & Advocacy Officer was invited by Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education in Dundee, Scotland, as a Guest Lecture to talk about the role of charities in sustainable development reflecting on the experience of Rethink Rebuild in supporting refugees and helping them rebuild their lives.
On Wed 10 Nov 2021, Rethink Rebuild Society hosted a session on domestic abuse. The session was delivered by Safety 4 Sisters and focused on what support and advice can be offered to women experience abuse (especially women from a migrant background) or to anyone that is concerned about a woman they know.
Our manager, Dr Haytham Alhamwi, was invited by Manchester Amnesty to an online event on Monday 8th November about the 10th anniversary of the Syrian uprising. Dr Alhamwi offered updates on the current situation in Syria and the situation of the Syrian refugees. He ended by mentioning some practical steps to support the work and the mission of Rethink Rebuild Society.
In partnership with the Syrian British Council we hosted on Tuesday 2 November a film screening of "Bringing Assad to Justice" followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers Anne Daly and Ronan Tynan. The film is a remarkable story of efforts against the odds to make one of the worst regimes of our time accountable for heinous crimes without parallel since the Nazis.
On Friday 22/10/2021, we were delighted to host the 2nd (and last workshop) on creating and designing a handmade patchwork quilt with messages of welcome to “Little Amal" The Walk.
The patches will all be joined together to form a quilt that will be offered to Little Amal when she arrives to Greater Manchester
Wed 13 Oct 2021, RR Board Member, Dr Mustafa Alachkar, facilitated a post-show discussion with writer and performer Avital Raz at HOME Manchester. My Jerusalem is a solo performance derived from a song. A politically charged tale of a drunken one night stand, infused with stories of growing up in 80s Israel.
