On Sunday, 28 January 2024, we hosted an enjoyable social gathering for the men in our community. The evening was filled with lively conversations, games like table tennis, pool, and chess, along with the warmth of hot drinks. It served as a great occasion for both old and new friends to connect, reflect, and strengthen the bonds within our community.
On Thursday, 11 January 2024, we hosted an online conversation titled "Shifting Landscapes: Syrian Refugee Women's Pursuit of Belonging," featuring researcher Sara Eltokhi. The discussion delved into the concept of belonging as experienced by Syrian refugee women in Milan.
On Sunday, 7 Jan 2024, in partnership with Scrubbed Up, we hosted a Mock Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) event at our centre. This annual event welcomed 24 students for realistic medical school interview practice, providing a valuable opportunity for skill development. A heartfelt thanks to all participants and organisers for making this event a success.
On Friday, 15 December 2023, we presented the screening of the film OBJECTOR (2019), followed by a captivating Q&A session with Atalya Ben-Abba, the film's main character, on Zoom from Jerusalem.
On Thursday 14th December, we had the honour of visiting IDNS offices to express our deep appreciation for the amazing sound system they installed at the Syrian Community Centre of Manchester. This transformative addition has truly elevated our work, and we are endlessly thankful for IDNS's generosity and support.
On Monday 11 December 2023, we attended an event organised by "Together with Refugees", a coalition of 500+ organisations advocating for a compassionate approach. The gathering launched the #FairBeginsHere campaign.
On Monday, 05 December, 2023, we had the privilege of hosting Ann Snow, the UK Special Representative for Syria, at our center in Manchester! We engaged in insightful discussions surrounding Syrian refugees in the UK and delved into the current situation in Syria.
On Saturday, 25 November 2023, we marked the 10th anniversary of the Syrian Community Centre of Manchester at our premises. It was an incredible night. Thank you very much to our distinguished guests, volunteers, and everyone who attended or supported us over the past 10 years. Your presence means a lot to us.
RR welcomes the Supreme Court decision deeming the UK government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda as unlawful. The judges concluded that Rwanda cannot be considered a safe destination for asylum seekers, as there is a risk of refoulment meaning that genuine refugees might be returned to the very countries they fled from.
On Friday, 3 November 2023, we had the privilege of meeting with Susan Osiche the CEO of Inua Kike, a partner of the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) at the University of Manchester and Dr. Adele Aubrey, who serves as the Head of Institute Operations and Partnerships at HCRI.
