English courses run by community volunteers have now started at our office. These courses, offered free of charge, will run at various times throughout the week. Refugees can come in for an initial assessment after which they will be placed in a course at their appropriate level.
The University of Manchester's Politics School hosting us today in a debate on the refugee crisis and what the UK should do in response to this crisis.
On BBC Radio Manchester, Rethink Rebuild Society's Advocacy and Policy Coordinator discussed the developments pertaining to Syrian refugees in the context of wider UK policy towards Syria.
Describing the dangerous conditions that made him flee Syria, Yasser Aljasser said that regime barrel bombs rained from the sky 'like bees'. These conditions prompted him to undertake a dangerous journey to the UK. Yasser affirms that although his brother was killed by ISIS, Assad remains the primary threat to civilians in the country.
Although his brother was killed by ISIS, RR's Office Coordinator stressed in an interview with the Manchester Evening News that the Assad regime remains the main problem in Syria. He described his harrowing experience in fleeing Syria and coming to the UK, saying that '[m]aybe if I’d known this journey, I wouldn’t have left Syria'.
