Al Za’atari Refugee Camp & Live Syrian Music

On Saturday 27th June, Rethink Rebuild Society hosted an inspiring event exploring the lived realities and remarkable resilience of Al Za’atari refugee camp. The afternoon brought together discussion, culture, and live Syrian music to highlight the strength and creativity of the communities living under extraordinary circumstances.

Professor Husam Alwaer of the University of Dundee delivered a thought provoking presentation examining the development of Alza’atari, one of the world's largest refugee camps. Through engaging discussion and powerful insights, he explained how residents transformed the camp planned settlement into a vibrant community. The talk explored how families created marketplaces, social spaces, and neighbourhoods, demonstrating resilience, innovation, and a strong sense of identity despite challenging conditions.

The event was further enriched by live performances from Syrian musicians, whose traditional music, songs, and dance created a warm uplifting atmosphere. The combination of storytelling, cultural expression, and shared experiences encouraged reflection on the importance of community, belonging, and hope.

The afternoon provided an inspiring celebration of Syrian culture and highlighted valuable lessons that Al Za’atari can offer the wider world about resilience, placemaking, and the power of communities to shape their own environments.
