In collaboration with Manchester City Council, Rethink Rebuild Society on Wednesday 4th of March hosted an Arab cultural awareness workshop aimed at strengthening engagement between frontline staff and the city’s diverse communities. The session, attended by 30 council employees, was delivered as part of an ongoing programme led by the Neighbourhood Team to deepen understanding of the lived experiences of residents. Focusing on Arab communities, the workshop explored the importance of cultural sensitivity in public service delivery, highlighting how improved awareness can help build trust, reduce misunderstandings, and ensure more inclusive decision-making across local authority services.
The interactive session combined practical guidance with reflective exercises, encouraging staff to examine assumptions and develop more effective communication strategies with Arab residents. Key themes included the role of family, respect and formality, communication styles, and the influence of religion on daily life, with particular attention given to real-world scenarios faced by council staff. Participants were equipped with practical tools to navigate sensitive situations confidently, from managing group interactions to checking understanding without causing discomfort. The workshop reinforced the importance of empathy, clarity, and professionalism, emphasising that small, thoughtful adjustments in approach can significantly enhance relationships between public services and the communities they serve.
