A Tale of Two Cities! Double Bill: Talk and Music Concert

On Saturday 17th May, Rethink Rebuild Society hosted A Tale of Two Cities! It was a moving and insightful event that brought together history, culture, and music in support of a vital cause.

Professor Husam AlWaer delivered a powerful presentation exploring the deep-rooted historical and cultural significance of Damascus and Aleppo — the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Through vivid visuals and thoughtful commentary, he traced the evolution of these cities across centuries, from Amorite and Ottoman influences to the impact of French colonialism and the more recent transformations following the Syrian revolution. The talk left the audience not only informed, but deeply moved by the resilience and beauty of Syria’s urban legacy.

The afternoon was then lifted by the soul-stirring performance of HiJazz, a Syrian band with a Scottish twist. The atmosphere was one of connection, reflection, and hope — especially knowing that all proceeds from the event go directly to supporting another year of education for students at Iqra School in Syria.

To everyone who came, supported, and gave so generously — a massive, heartfelt thank you. You made this afternoon beautiful and truly impactful.
