Bridging Worlds: Navigating Integration and Heritage for Syrian Immigrants

On Saturday 23rd November, Rethink Rebuild Society in collaboration with Abjad Initiative hosted a thought-provoking event aimed at deepening understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by Syrian immigrants as they navigate the complexities of integrating into new societies while preserving their cultural heritage.

The event began with an engaging presentation by the Abjad Initiative, an organisation dedicated to supporting the cultural and educational needs of Syrian communities. Through its innovative projects, Abjad has created a vital bridge between generations, helping to preserve the rich history and traditions of Syrian culture. The initiative plays a crucial role in addressing the emotional and psychological needs of Syrian immigrants, offering spaces for storytelling, education, and cultural exchange. Abjad’s work highlights the importance of staying connected to one’s heritage while adapting to a new environment, fostering a sense of community and belonging for those displaced by conflict.

The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Bishr al-Najjar, a distinguished academic known for his work on immigration and integration. Bishr spoke movingly about the complex journey of Syrian immigrants, sharing insights into their emotional and psychological struggles. From the trauma of displacement to the challenge of rebuilding lives in unfamiliar lands, he outlined the multifaceted hurdles immigrants face. Despite these challenges, Bishr emphasised the resilience and strength of the Syrian people, celebrating their ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. His reflections offered a powerful reminder of the immense courage required to navigate the intricate landscapes of legal, social, and economic integration.

Throughout the event, there was a strong sense of shared commitment to building more inclusive communities, where cultural diversity is celebrated and heritage is preserved. The gathering provided a valuable platform for insightful discussions and practical solutions, highlighting the importance of balancing integration with the preservation of cultural identity.

We extend our gratitude to the Abjad Initiative and Bishr al-Najjar for their contribution to this event.
