On Saturday 16th Novemeber, Rethink Rebuild Society had the pleasure of screening 'Hijabi (2024)'. It was a powerful and thought-provoking experience that offered a deep dive into the complexities of identity, culture, and faith. The film presented a nuanced portrayal of Muslim women who wear the hijab, exploring their personal stories, challenges, and triumphs in a society that often misunderstands or stereotypes them. It was both insightful and educational, shedding light on the diverse reasons women choose to wear the hijab, as well as the strength and resilience they exhibit in the face of societal pressure.
Following the screening, a lively and enriching discussion took place, featuring a brilliant panel of Muslim women who shared their own experiences and reflections on the film. Their diverse perspectives sparked a meaningful conversation about identity, feminism, and the intersection of religion and personal choice. The panelists' thoughtful and articulate responses helped deepen the audience's understanding of the issues raised by the film, making it clear that the conversation around hijab is complex, multifaceted, and deserving of respect and thoughtful dialogue.
A heartfelt thank you to the Director, Samir Mehanovic for creating this film and for his presence and invaluable contribution to the event. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Panel, Amna Abdullatif, Tracey Pook, Fatima Mahmood and Dr Yasmine Nahlawi (Chair). It was a privilege to hear from individuals so committed to elevating voices that are often marginalised.
We would also like to thank Manchester Amnesty for the beautiful display of artwork created using messages of solidarity and love written by the public at the weekly silent vigil held outside Manchester Central Library calling for a ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and human rights.
