On the 1st March Rethink Rebuild Society will be screening Gurinder Chadha’s 2019 musical comedy ‘Blinded by the Light’, starring Viveik Kalra, adapted from the memoir by journalist Sarfraz Manzoor.
‘Blinded by the Light’ is set in 1987 Luton during the Thatcher years and recounts Javed’s experiences as the son of Pakinstani immigrants, growing up as a British-Pakistani at this time. After a spate of challenges arise – some personal, others political – Javed finds solace in the music of Bruce Sprinstein. The film sends the message that music can transcend race and religion, even in a divided society.
Best known for her acclaimed film, ‘Bend it Like Beckham’, Chadha has focused her directorial career on themes of immigration, particularly the idea of being caught between two worlds. On the topic of ‘Blinded by the Light’ she said, “at a time of such political and social instability in the world, this film provides us with a vital reminder of our shared humanity and the transformative power of music on both a personal and global scale.”
The film screening will be followed by a discussion that will give the audience a chance to share their own experiences and viewpoints on the topic of immigration and ethnic minorities in Britain today.
