In partnership with Manchester Salon for Intellectual Dialogue (MSID), Rethink Rebuild hosted a group discussion session about the topic of ‘War and Humanity’ on Thursday 29th November.
The discussion used as its starting point this year’s Reith Lectures, a series of annual public lectures commissioned by the BBC. This year, the lectures were entitled ‘The Mark of Cain’ and were delivered by Margaret MacMillan, historian and professor of history at the University of Oxford. In these lectures, Professor MacMillan explored the tangled history of war and our very complicated reactions and feelings towards it and also the people who fight.
The participants discussed the issues raised in the lectures as well as several pertinent points. Naturally, the discussion took an interest in the situation in Syria and the ongoing war there. Issues like identity, violence, civil resistance and reconciliation.
