On Wednesday 20 July 2022, RR organised a debate on the advantages and disadvantages of interfering in the affairs of others. The debate was facilitated by Dr Mustafa Alachkar who asked audience intriguing questions about the conditions that necessities intervention in the lives of other.
We, members and supporters of the Syrian community, wrote a letter to the Home Secretary to express our deep concern about the continued threat to asylum seekers of forced removal to Rwanda
On Saturday and Sunday 9 & 10 July 2022, we held Eid al-Adha Celebrations at our new centre. For 2 consecutive evenings, our centre was open for all to come and celebrate Eid with their families, friends and loved ones. Lots of fun activities, competitions, games, and sweets were organised and everyone, especially the kids had an exciting time.
On Tuesday 28 June and Tuesday 5 July, we held our first events at our new centre by organizing two introductory Zumba session for ladies only. It was a great opportunity for our ladies to reconnect with each other in a funny, sociable, and healthy manner by practising Zumba and having a great time with each other.
Amidst the continued refugee crisis and its ramifications regionally and globally, Rethink Rebuild Society participated in a timely and important workshop of academic & practitioners: Syrian refugees in regional & global context, organised by The London School of Economics and Political Science - LSE in London.
Asylum seekers in Britain are reported to be amongst those to be sent to Rwanda. Approximately 17 people from Syria, Sudan and Egypt who are being held at “the Broke House” immigration removal centre nearby Gatwick Airport, started to protest when they were informed that they would be deported to Rwanda on 14th June 2022 as part of a controversial new plan.
On Wednesday 19 May 2022, we hosted the film screening and post-screening discussion of the film “Hive” at our centre in Longsight. It is an award-winning film and a true story of resilience and hope with strong parallels to the story of many Syrian women and families. HIVE is a powerful tribute to everyday women who quietly, and against the odds, change lives.
Two Iftaars have been successfully organised for the Syrian community in Manchester during the blessed month of Ramadan at our centre in Longsight. Every Iftaar was attended by nearly 70 people who had their Iftaar and performed taraweeh prayers together. It was a lovely atmosphere to reconnect with our community in Ramadan again after 2 years of lockdown because of Covid.
On Saturday 25 April 2022, Rethink Rebuild Society participated in a campaign to Keep Manchester tidy. A group of volunteers from the Syrian community in Manchester gathered together to clean the streets of Longsight and do litter picking. We wish to thank all of those who were involved especially children for their hard work.
On Thursday 21 April 2022, and in partnership with Mawlawi Kurdish Cultural Centre Shekh Raouf Barzinji Mosque, we delivered 2 presentations in Arabic about three important types of cancer in the UK that can be diagnosed early by the NHS free screenings: breast cancer, cervical cancer, and bowel cancer.
