Assad and Russian jets have launched brutal air strikes on eastern Aleppo, killing at hundreds of people in the northern city and its countryside. At least 30 neighbourhoods were targeted. The relentless bombardment was hampering the ability of rescue workers to help civilians caught up in the fighting. Three centres for a volunteer rescue group known as the "White Helmets" were also hit in the raids in addition to many hospitals. All sorts of weapons are being used including cluster bombs and white phosphorus.
