The film
An Iranian exile in London, who is haunted by his past, gets involved in the conflicts of a total stranger and has to see it through until the end, in this mesmerising slow-burn thriller. Gholam is a man torn between old loyalties and present commitments, with no clear vision of the future.
Set amid London’s Iranian community during the Arab spring of 2011, Gholam is the story of an enigmatic and melancholic Iranian man, who has two jobs, yet seems uninterested in the money. We learn that he was hero in the Iran-Iraq war, and yet disappeared from the battlefield without a trace. He eats at his uncle’s café every day, yet is fully aware of being betrayed by him. He agrees to the arrangement his mother makes for his return home, yet has no intention of going back.
A man with no past, no future, no convictions, he still gets involved in the conflict of a total stranger and carries it through to the very end.
Tabrizian’s eloquent and increasingly unsettling movie has its roots in her 2005-6 photographic series Border, a collection of portraits of “exiles from Iran” who have travelled to the UK, and who seem displaced from their immediate surroundings – a theme continued in this film. (The Guardian)
