The film:
An Oscar nominated film, and the winner of the Special Jury Prize of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, ‘Omar’ tells the story of a young Palestinian freedom fighter who agrees to work as an informant after he's tricked into an admission of guilt by association in the wake of an Israeli soldier's killing.
“Of course, there is nothing ordinary about their lives. We see Omar, a baker by trade, harassed and humiliated by Israeli soldiers. He and his friends have no freedom of movement. Bristling against the restrictions placed on them, they have become "freedom fighters”. There is also a documentary-like aspect to its portrayal of a divided and occupied Palestine in which the lines between everyday family life and political struggle have long since become blurred”. (The Independent)
“Sharply and sensitively acted, vibrantly shot by (lots of Middle Eastern shades of terracotta and orange) and very briskly edited, Omar has the intimacy of a star-crossed romance and the political and moral complexity of a le Carré story. It's a lean, controlled film and most compelling”. (The Guardian)
It is a multi-layered tale of love, resistance and betrayal that tackles the complexity of the Palestinian society and its struggle under the Israeli occupation.
